AI Search Guide

Help AI tools find the right facts about your business.

A buyer may see your business mentioned, linked or recommended before visiting your website. Each result means something different. None is automatically a lead.

Buyers can get an answer before they visit you

Search results are no longer limited to a list of links. Some search experiences retrieve information from the web, combine material from several sources and present a generated answer with citations.

ChatGPT Search can show inline citations and a Sources panel. Perplexity describes a process that searches for information, synthesizes an answer and cites sources. Claude web search can also include citations when web search is used.

Google explains that its AI search features use the same basic eligibility foundations as Search. A page must be accessible and eligible to appear, but eligibility does not guarantee inclusion. Google says there is no special optimization required beyond established Search practices in its AI-features guidance.

You may see providers call this AEO or GEO. They use those labels in different ways. You do not need to buy two acronym-led services: compare the pages, facts, access controls, source evidence and measurement the provider will actually change.

SEO still matters because accessible, useful and accurate pages remain the foundation. What changed is that rankings and clicks no longer describe the whole buyer path. See what organic SEO should do.

The practical change is in the path. A buyer may read a synthesized answer before visiting a website. That makes accurate public information and clear source ownership more important. It does not make the website, local profile, product page or service page optional.

How does information move from a source to a buyer action?

For a plain-English explanation of query rewriting, source access, retrieval, synthesis and citations, start with How AI Search Works.

Use the focused chapters when the decision is narrower: Google AI Overviews for Google Search, citation surfaces for cross-platform source evidence, entity foundations for conflicting public facts and the robots.txt decision guide for crawler-purpose controls.

An AI answer sits in the middle of a longer path. Each step can succeed or fail independently.

StageThe decision that matters
PublishIs the information useful, specific, accurate and owned by the right page?
CrawlCan an allowed crawler access the public content?
Index or source accessIs the information available to the system being used?
RetrieveDoes the system select the source for this question and context?
SynthesizeHow does the platform combine and qualify the retrieved information?
Cite, mention or recommendWhat exactly appears in the answer?
VisitDoes the buyer choose to open a source or profile?
ActDoes the right buyer call, book, enquire, request a demo or place an order?

A technical problem near the start can prevent later eligibility. A weak or unsupported page can make the source less useful. Yet a sound source can still be omitted because retrieval and answer selection belong to the platform.

What can your business improve?

Start with the public information you own and the buyer questions it must answer.

  • Make the website accessible to the crawlers you intend to allow.
  • Give each important page one clear job.
  • State organization, service, product, provider and location facts consistently.
  • Answer the buyer’s immediate question before adding background detail.
  • Support consequential claims with appropriate primary evidence.
  • Add original information that helps a buyer compare, qualify or decide.
  • Correct stale facts and show meaningful review or update dates.
  • Connect the page to an appropriate next action.

Google’s people-first content guidance asks whether content serves an intended audience, demonstrates useful knowledge and leaves the reader satisfied. That is a better standard than writing fragments designed to imitate an AI answer.

What do the platforms still decide?

The platform decides whether to retrieve a source, how much context to use, whether to cite it and how to frame the final response. The query, wording, account context, location, model and date can all affect what is observed.

Current research supports caution, not a universal recipe. A 2025 academic preprint examined source patterns across 11,500 Google AI Overview queries, but its findings remain tied to that sample and design (arXiv: 2506.12676). A Conductor study recorded 1,056 cross-engine citation observations, which is useful category evidence but remains vendor research with a defined sample (methodology and findings).

Neither source turns a correlation into a ranking factor. Neither proves what will happen for your business tomorrow. Improve eligibility, meaning and evidence. Treat the served answer as an observation made under recorded conditions.

Are a citation, mention and recommendation the same?

No. Grouping them into one “AI visibility” score hides important differences.

ObservationWhat it tells youWhat it does not tell you
CitationA displayed source was attached to an answer. That the answer endorses the business or produced a visit.
MentionThe business or page appeared in the response. That a source was cited or the buyer was advised to choose it.
RecommendationThe answer presented the business as an option or choice. That the buyer visited, qualified or became a customer.

Accuracy is another test. A business can be mentioned with the wrong service, product, provider or location. Record whether the statement was correct, not only whether the name appeared.

How do visibility, visits and business outcomes connect?

Keep each record in its own layer:

  1. Answer observation: citation, mention, recommendation and accuracy.
  2. Platform record: any available impression, feature or referral data with its documented limits.
  3. Website behavior: visit, engaged session or onsite action.
  4. Qualified action: a valid call, appropriate appointment request, prospective-client enquiry, qualified demo request or legitimate order.
  5. Commercial outcome: booked work, scheduled care, accepted matter, qualified pipeline or completed transaction under the business’s own definition.

Movement in one layer does not prove movement in the next. A cited page may receive no visit. A visit may be irrelevant. A qualified enquiry may not become revenue.

The detailed protocol belongs in Measuring AI Search Honestly.

What does this mean in each industry?

The system connects, but the buyer question and valuable action change.

IndustryExample buyer questionPublic information that must be clearQualified action to track separately
Home ServicesWho handles this service in my area and when should I call?Service, service area, availability limits, licence facts where relevant and safe next stepValid call or booking request
HealthcareWhich provider or service is appropriate, and how do I access care?Provider, service, location, clinical review boundary and appropriate appointment pathAppropriate appointment request
LegalWhich practice and jurisdiction fit my issue, and what happens at intake?Practice area, attorney role, jurisdiction, advertising limits and intake expectationsQualified prospective-client enquiry
B2B SaaSWhich product fits this use case, integration and buying constraint?Capability, limitation, evidence, pricing owner and comparison contextQualified demo or trial that enters the sales process
eCommerceWhich product fits my need, and can I verify the important details?Category, product, variant, availability, policy and merchant factsValid order

Healthcare examples need clinical and privacy review. Legal examples need review for the relevant jurisdiction and advertising rules.

How should you measure AI visibility without fooling yourself?

One answer is a screenshot, not a benchmark.

Define a fixed set of meaningful buyer questions. Preserve the wording. Record the platform, date, location, account state and any other known context. Repeat the observations on a declared schedule, then report variation instead of hiding it.

Keep organic rankings, Maps visibility, AI answer presence, visits, qualified actions and commercial outcomes in separate columns. Use percentages only when the denominator is clear. Label vendor or third-party platform data by source rather than blending it into a universal score.

The aim is to answer three questions: What changed? Why might it matter? What should we investigate or improve next? If the evidence cannot establish causation, say so.

What is the right next step?

Begin with the public path, not an acronym. Check whether your most important buyer questions have one clear page, accurate facts, usable evidence and an appropriate action.
