A Plain-English Buying Standard

We don't guarantee rankings. We guarantee clarity about the work.

Google decides which result appears and where. Mindflow commits to the work it controls: the evidence, priorities, changes, checks and explanation you receive.

No agency controls your ranking.

An SEO agency can improve your website, pages, profiles and measurement. It cannot award your business a position in Google.

Google says this directly. Its current guide to hiring an SEO tells buyers to find someone else if an agency guarantees that its changes will produce first place. Google also says paying for advertising does not improve your organic position.

That does not make SEO pointless. It makes the boundary important. The agency controls its research, recommendations and work. Google controls crawling, indexing, serving and ranking. A useful proposal should not blur those two roles.

Mindflow does not promise a position that Mindflow cannot award. We explain what we expect a change to improve, what could prevent that improvement and how we will check what happened.

No guarantee does not mean no accountability.

“We cannot guarantee rankings” can become an excuse if the agency stops there. You still need clear commitments.

What the agency can commit toWhat you should receive
DiagnosisThe evidence reviewed, the gap found and the limit of the evidence
PrioritiesWhat comes first, why it comes first and what depends on it
ChangesThe page, profile, technical control or measurement rule that will change
OwnershipA named decision owner, executor and escalation path
ValidationA before, change and after record, with correction where needed
CommunicationA clear cadence, unanswered questions and decisions required from you

Google recommends asking an SEO what results it expects, in what timeframe, how success will be measured and whether it will explain every change. Those are reasonable questions even when the answer includes uncertainty.

The FTC’s advertising guidance for small businesses gives another useful rule: objective claims need evidence. A guarantee badge or refund offer does not replace that evidence.

Do not collapse eligibility, visibility, action and revenue.

A ranking promise often makes four different steps sound like one result.

  1. Eligibility: Can the platform access and consider the page or profile?
  2. Visibility: Did the business appear for a defined search in a defined place and time?
  3. Qualified action: Did the right person call, request an appointment, enquire, book a demo or place an order?
  4. Commercial outcome: Did that action become booked work, a completed appointment, an accepted matter, pipeline or a valid sale?

Google’s technical requirements say a page needs crawl access, a successful response and indexable content to be eligible. Google also says meeting those requirements does not guarantee indexing.

The same separation continues after a page appears. A position does not guarantee a click. A click does not guarantee a qualified enquiry. An enquiry does not guarantee revenue. Each step needs its own definition and record.

Mindflow can put the controlled work in writing.

Mindflow can state what we will review, what we will change and how we will check it. A scope should answer these questions before work begins:

  • Which business result is the work meant to support?
  • Which pages, profiles and technical controls are in scope?
  • What evidence sets the first priorities?
  • Who decides, who implements and who approves?
  • Which client access, facts or approvals are required?
  • How will each material change be recorded?
  • Which visibility and business records will be reported separately?
  • What happens when the evidence does not support the first assumption?

That is stronger than promising activity. “We will optimize your site” is not specific enough. “We will correct the service-page duplication identified in the crawl, explain the canonical decision and check index status after release” is a commitment you can inspect.

You should also keep ownership of your domain, website, Search Console, analytics and Business Profile. Google’s Business Profile third-party policy requires clients to retain ownership or co-ownership and requires third parties to communicate changes.

Google, Maps and AI systems make different decisions.

There is no single fixed “ranking” that an agency can hold for every buyer.

SurfaceWhat the agency can influenceWhat the platform decides
Google organic resultsAccess, page meaning, usefulness, internal links, technical quality and corroborating signalsWhether a page is indexed, which result is useful for a query and its order
Google Maps and local resultsAccurate profile facts, categories, service information, review operations, local pages and consistencyThe result for a searcher using relevance, distance and prominence signals
AI Overviews and AI ModeIndexable, useful content with clear facts and supporting evidenceWhether content is retrieved, used, linked or shown in a generated response
Other AI answer systemsCrawl permissions, clear public facts, useful pages and third-party corroborationWhether the system retrieves, cites, names or recommends the business

Google describes organic ranking systems that consider many factors and signals. Its local ranking guidance says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence, and that a business cannot pay Google for a better local rank. Distance alone means two people can see different local results.

Google’s guidance on third-party SEO services says external tools do not have access to its internal ranking data and cannot guarantee performance. That applies whether the sales page calls the work SEO, AI visibility, AEO or GEO.

A guarantee can be easy to satisfy and still be useless.

The word “guaranteed” tells you very little until the promise defines the query and the rules.

Industry pages about ranking guarantees commonly describe promises built around a branded search, a very specific low-demand phrase or a broad “top ten” result. Those patterns are not proof that every guarantee is deceptive. They show why you need the actual keyword list, baseline and business value before treating a position as a win.

You also need to know how the work will be done. Google’s spam policies say manipulative practices may lead to lower rankings or exclusion. Fast movement is not useful if the method creates a risk the proposal never disclosed.

There are documented cases of deceptive promises. In one enforcement action, the FTC alleged that Pointbreak Media falsely claimed a Google relationship and falsely promised first-place or first-page placement. That is one specific case, not a label for every agency making a guarantee.

Read the guarantee as a contract, not a headline.

Use this Promise-to-Control Test before a guarantee affects your decision.

FieldWhat the proposal must state
1. OutcomeThe exact position, traffic action or business result promised
2. SurfaceGoogle organic, Maps, AI answer, another engine or paid advertising
3. Query setThe exact branded and non-branded searches included
4. GeographyCountry, city, service area or searcher-location rule
5. ContextDevice, language and any personalization assumptions
6. BaselineWhat the same measurement showed before work began
7. DeadlineThe date and the period for which the result must hold
8. Controlled actionsWhat the agency will actually do
9. DependenciesAccess, approvals, platform decisions, competitors and client operations
10. EvidenceThe source, collection method and retained proof
11. RemedyRefund, credit, additional work or another response, including exclusions
12. OwnerThe person responsible for the work and the decision

Then classify the promise:

  • Controllable commitment: the agency can perform it and prove whether it happened.
  • Platform-dependent forecast: the agency can influence it, but the platform awards the result.
  • Commercial dependency: it also depends on price, capacity, intake, sales or operations.
  • Unverifiable promise: the context, evidence or remedy is missing.

A money-back clause does not make an unsupported claim reliable. The FTC says a money-back guarantee is not a substitute for substantiation. Read the exclusions and ask what evidence existed before the promise was made.

Measure movement without borrowing meaning from the next step.

Rankings can be useful evidence when the query, page, market, device and date are held clear. They should remain a visibility signal.

Google Search Console reports impressions, clicks, click-through rate and average position. Its measurement guidance recommends paying more attention to trends in impressions and clicks than to position alone. It also warns that competitor changes, user interest and other events can contribute to performance movement.

Use a separate record for every layer:

LayerExample sourceWhat it can support
EligibilityCrawl, index and profile-status recordsThe page or profile could participate
VisibilitySearch Console and dated observationThe business appeared or gained exposure
BehaviorAnalytics, call and form eventsA person took an action
QualificationIntake, CRM or order rulesThe action fit the business
Commercial outcomeScheduling, matter, pipeline or order systemThe qualified action became business

That method does not make attribution perfect. It prevents a ranking increase from being reported as revenue without the records between them. Read the fuller honest measurement guide.

The business outcome changes across five industries.

The control boundary stays the same. The useful business record changes.

IndustryVisibility is not the finish lineRecord the business actually needs
Home ServicesA local position does not show whether the caller needs a service you provide in your area.Valid calls, estimate requests and booked jobs that fit service area and capacity
HealthcareA page impression does not show whether the request is appropriate or became an appointment.Appropriate requests and completed appointments, kept inside privacy and clinical boundaries
LegalA practice-area ranking does not show whether an enquiry fits the matter and jurisdiction.Qualified prospective-client enquiries and accepted matters
B2B SaaSTraffic does not show whether a visitor fits the product, use case or buying stage.Qualified demos, trials, opportunities and pipeline under the sales rule
eCommerceProduct visibility does not show whether an order was valid, retained or profitable.Valid orders, returns and contribution-aware sales

An SEO agency can support those outcomes. It cannot control every operational decision after discovery. Your measurement plan should name the handoff instead of pretending the search platform closed the sale.

Make the agency guarantee the work it controls.

Apply this standard to Mindflow too.

Mindflow delivers the engagement. I review the evidence, set or approve the priorities and remain responsible for the recommendation. Specialists may perform development, certain writing and technical implementation. The scope should show that boundary instead of implying that one person performs every task.

We will not guarantee a Google position, a Maps rank, an AI citation, a number of calls or a revenue result. We can commit to a defined review, named priorities, agreed implementation, a work record, clear measurement and a direct explanation when the evidence changes the plan.

If a proposal promises page one, include the exact guarantee, query list, geography, deadline and remedy with your Free Visibility Check request. Mindflow will separate the controlled work from the platform-dependent forecast and point out the information needed to judge the promise. This is a marketing-scope review, not legal advice.

For the rest of the decision, use the questions to ask before hiring an SEO agency or review Mindflow’s organic SEO service, local SEO and Maps work and AI visibility service.
